The recent high profile grizzly suspected murder case of Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi brought to my attention the eatery chain TamJai Yunnan Mixian, as the mourning partner of Choi, Tam Chuk Kwan, is the son of Tam Chap Kwan, who is the founder of said eatery chain.

As you guessed it, TamJai Yunnan Mixian is indeed related to the similarly named TamJai Sam Gor Mixian outlets in Singapore. In 2020, TamJai Sam Gor Mixian opened its first restaurants outside of Hong Kong — in Singapore at locations like Bedok Mall, VivoCity and Chinatown Point. At the time of writing, there are nine TamJai Sam Gor Mixian outlets in Singapore, according to their official takeaway orders page.

For the uninitiated, TamJai Sam Gor Mixian specialises in noodles with a choice of various soup broths or bases, which are ma la, charred pepper, Chongqing hot and sour, hot and sour, tomato, clear and vegetarian. Customers can go full custom with their choices of soup base, spicy levels and ingredients if they wish. However, there are special sets or seasonal menus for those who are lazy or intimidated by a crazy custom order.

Why Sam Gor?

Sam Gor literally means “third brother” in Cantonese, and yes, TamJai Sam Gor Mixian originated from the third of a group of brothers…
