A hikki fan looks back.

Nylon Japan magazine is celebrating their 20th anniversary issue with a special double cover featuring Utada Hikaru. Credit: Utada Hikaru’s website.

Japanese-American singer-songwriter Utada Hikaru or Hikki, as fans would also call her, is releasing her 1st Greatest Hits Album titled “Science Fiction” today, and she will be touring in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan as part of the new album release.

There is almost zero chance that she will come to Singapore for a concert or to promote her new album, so fans like myself who live in Southeast Asia will probably have to go to the above-mentioned countries to attend her concert. I was chatting with a friend over Facebook messenger about our ‘fandom’ over Hikki, so I thought to do a blog post about my journey with her music.

Early days

Hikki made her Japanese album debut First Love at the age of 15, with two successful singles — “Automatic/Time Will Tell” and “Movin’ On Without You”.

Back in secondary school, I bought her “Wait & See (Risk)” single (released April 19, 2000) from the now defunct CD-RAMA shop at Hougang Mall.
